How We Use the Barton Reading & Spelling System at Empowered Tutoring

At Empowered Tutoring, we believe every child can become a confident, successful reader—and the Barton Reading & Spelling System is one of the powerful tools we use to make that happen. Designed specifically for students with dyslexia or other reading difficulties, Barton is a structured, evidence-based program that breaks reading and spelling into clear, manageable steps. But it’s not just for children with diagnosed learning differences—it’s effective for any child who needs a stronger foundation in literacy.

Barton is built on the Orton-Gillingham approach, which is multisensory, explicit, and systematic. That means students don’t just read or spell—they see it, hear it, and physically interact with the sounds and letters in every lesson. This approach strengthens neural pathways for learning and helps students internalize the rules and patterns of English—something that many traditional programs miss.

During sessions, Daisha Glenn (M.Ed., Barton Certified) carefully guides each student through Barton levels at their own pace. Each session includes direct instruction, hands-on materials, guided practice, and positive reinforcement. We focus on phonemic awareness, sound-symbol recognition, spelling rules, and decoding strategies, ensuring students not only learn to read—but understand what they’re reading.

What sets Empowered Tutoring apart is our ability to blend Barton with personalized support. If a child is also struggling with attention, confidence, or processing delays, we adjust our pacing and delivery to meet those needs. With Daisha’s background in special education, mental health, and social work, sessions are compassionate, patient, and rooted in a deep understanding of how children learn best.

And the results speak for themselves—many of our students have jumped multiple reading levels in a short period of time, even after years of stagnation.

At Empowered Tutoring, we don’t just teach reading. We transform lives—one sound, one word, one breakthrough at a time.
