How We Use SPIRE in Small Group Sessions at Empowered Tutoring

At Empowered Tutoring, we understand that every student learns differently—and that sometimes, learning alongside peers in a supportive, structured environment can make all the difference. That’s why we offer small group sessions using the SPIRE Reading Program, a powerful, multisensory curriculum designed to help struggling readers build the foundational skills they need for long-term literacy success.

SPIRE (Specialized Program Individualizing Reading Excellence) is ideal for small groups because it's flexible, highly structured, and easy to tailor to students with similar learning goals. Groups are kept intentionally small (typically 3–5 students) so that each child gets plenty of individual attention while also benefiting from the energy, encouragement, and peer support that small group learning provides.

In each session, students engage in a 10-step lesson cycle that targets all the key areas of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, spelling, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Lessons are multisensory and interactive—students see, hear, say, and write as they move through each activity. Repetition, direct instruction, and guided practice ensure that skills are not just introduced but truly mastered.

What makes our small groups special is that they’re led by Daisha Glenn, M.Ed., a certified special education teacher with years of experience in reading intervention. Daisha creates a nurturing, positive environment where students feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and grow—both academically and emotionally.

Small group SPIRE sessions are perfect for students who need targeted support but thrive in social learning settings. And for many, it’s where reading confidence finally starts to bloom.
